Justin Bieber One Time
Written by: Terius Nash and Waynne Nugent
Produced by: Christopher “Tricky” Stewart
Released: July 2009 by Island Records
“One Time” is another sweet clean song of teen romance, and arguably the sweetest possible kick off for Justin Bieber’s career. Unfortunately, all sweetness aside, it does some rather generic amongst today R&B/pop mix of recordings and it also gives Bieber little opportunity to show off the distinctive qualities of his voice.
Written by Terius “The-Dream” Nash and produced by Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, you get a contemporary and commerical sound that sounds a lot like Chris Brown for tweens. There’s nothing really wrong with it per se, but you are left wondering as the tune fades, whether or not it would have made it anywhere without the backing and push of a major record label especially since his debut album hit shelves in late fall of 2009.
Say what you will however, the single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 95 for the week of July 25 2009 and stayed on the charts for nearly six months, peaking at number 17 and it did chart at number 89 on the 2009 Billboard Year End Hot 100. In addition, the single was certified Platinum in Canada in September 2009 and in the USA in January 2010. As of February 2011, the single has sold over 2,132,000 times.
Opinion is divided on just how “run of the mill” the songs and his performance is as Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblat named it one of the hottest songs of fall 2009 state that Bieber’s “pop-soul bonafides with the refreshingly age -appropriate chronicle of young love.
The bottom line is that careers have been launched based on successful first singles exactly like “One Time.” Moreover, considering he was “discovered” by current manager Scooter Braun singing on YouTube at the age of 15, and flown to Atlanta to meet with Usher and then sung for Island Def Jam CEO L.A. Reid who promptly signed him to a contact, his career might just become one that is the stuff of pop legend.
